Xeelee Sequence Timelike Infinity The Eye by ArtOfSoulburn Xeelee Sequence Timelike Infinity The Eye by ArtOfSoulburn
Michael Poole riding the "Hermit Crab" towards the Spline warship, from the book "Timelike Infinity", part of the Xeelee Sequence by Stephen Baxter. The Spline are basically giant intelligent whales that have modified themselves to become spaceships, and rent themselves out to the highest bidders, in this story, the Qax. All painted in 2d in Photoshop.

The concept of scale takes on endless new potential in the limitless volumes of outer space.

They're huge, although I must admit I took a little bit of artistic license with the original book and made them slightly bigger :)

You have an amazing skill at adapting these works into stunning images. The Xeelee sequence is one of those 'great' scifi novels that don't get enough appreciation. The main reason behind this, is probably simply due to how alien the concepts are, as they are presented in the books.

Needless to say, we need more artists like you, able to show such unique and vivid worlds.

Sorry for gushing, in a probably incoherent manner. Love this image, and I appreciate all the effort you've put into it. :u

Glad you love the image so much. I think the books are maybe a little high on tech and theory for a more general audience, but I love them, and will continue to make work based on them.

Still I hold out hope for the harder blend of sci-fi reaching general acceptance. Or at least a wider audience.

The TV-adaption of The Expanse shows that if the production values are high enough, people will enjoy even something like the writing of 'James S. A. Corey' and their blend of techno babble.

My favorite is when they blend an emotional human story with hard science stuff. Sadly, getting both in the same show/film/book is rare.
