Megastructures 1 Ringworld 2 by ArtOfSoulburn Megastructures 1 Ringworld 2 by ArtOfSoulburn

The first of a new series I'm working on, Megastructures will explore a number or larger than life scifi engineering projects.

We'll start with The Ringworld, CATEGORY: STELLAR SCALE. A Ringworld is an artificial ring in space large enough to maintain an atmosphere and habitable land. The ring spins to create g-forces, and inner walls could be used to hold in the atmosphere. “Stellar Scale” rings could have a radius roughly equal to the radius of the Earth's orbit around the sun, and could in fact have a sun at its centroid.

Inspired by Larry Niven's Ringworld, Halo, and all the other Ringworlds in science fiction.

Unless the inner ring was very close to the outer ring and made of a radiation shielding material, there would be nothing to keep the atmosphere in the outer ring from being eroded away by radiation, not to mention that with or without an atmosphere the people living on the ringworld would suffer the results of direct solar radiation every day. Also, a ring that big would have to be spinning really fast to generate earth-like gravity; it would make one revolution around the sun every 9 days if it were at earth's distance.
Cool artwork nonetheless though :D I think I heard about this kind of concept a little before the movie Elysium came out. It's a totally feisable concept, if scaled down and with some adjustments

Which is why Halo is a much better idea as they orbit planets

Nice! Ever had your artwork featured by a pop sci or astronomy publication?

Glad you like it. Nope, never published like that, although I have done album covers and work in art books. Maybe some day :)

Dang, cool ringworld megastructure~!

I've been developing what I can with my own ring megastructure, hope you like~!

Nice to know that Ring-worlds predate Bungie. I take it that cylindrical space-stations could also class as a ring-world?

No, those are called O'Neill Cylinders and they're different from the general idea of a "Ringworld".

Space Elevator. That's the plan, of course, the exact release order may change depending on what's inspiring me more at a particular time :) But the Space Elevator is almost done, so I'm pretty sure it'll be #2.

I gotta say I'm really looking forwards to seeing it.  Any ideas for future stellar scale objects?

Yup, an Alderson disk, all the various Dyson Sphere variants, a Topopolis. Lots of ideas. The series will likely take me years, but I'll get to em. Thanks for following along!

Beautiful.

I think the one one of the mega-structures that interests me most is the shell workd, as described in one of the later Banks novels.

Sweet.  I did try to sketch some ideas for a shell world, but I couldnt get the perpective, nor do I have the technical skill to do the image the description conjures justice.
Perhaps what I wished to show requires a partially destoried shell world.

Well, I'll do my best to capture it, or at least some aspect of it, as I'm only doing one finished view per structure, each structure could be viewed from so many different angles, but only have time for one :)

Sigh. I wish people would stop calling it HALO. Ringworld was published in 1970 and won the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus awards.

To be sure, there is a knock off here - but it ain't Ringworld.

A very nice image. Well done.

BTW, I know its frustrating when people come in who think that Bungie invented the idea of a ringworld, I was certainly expecting these sorts of comments, but I'm hoping this series to be educational, and give people a wider selection of older scifi sources to check out. I love Larry Niven, I love Halo, both were inspiration for this image, and this megastructures series will explore the structures portrayed in so many scifi stories through the ages.
